Where were we? Oh, right, I remember.
Now that the board has been cut out, the edges need to be cleaned up and shaped into smooth rails. I start by using a Surform to remove any ridges caused from the cutting job. Once all the lumps and bumps are gone, I continue with the Surform, but now I add bevels to all the edges. This is the step where the rails begin to take shape. Most folks will use a router for this part, but I prefer to use traditional hand tools for all of my shaping.
Okay, bevels added, now sand the entire board. Sanded smooth, pencil lines removed, I again turn my attention back to the rails, I want to ensure a consistent roundness along all sides. Now I get to use my favorite tool, my Concave Cabinet Scrapers. A simple, but highly effective tool. If there was a tool Olympics, the scraper would get a gold medal…you know, like Michael Phelps good.
Rails are now rounded, wood clump transformed into a skateboard!
